in particular the very expensive builds ($200k +).
They are the worst of serious auto-xers & lawn chair car enthusiasts combined. I’m happy to see the old cars been driven, but the owners of them. They talk about how they are not built like they where use too. They talk about how straight the body is, & how the panel gaps where smalll. “It’s how they came from the factory.” THEY CAME WITH PANEL GAPS YOU COULD FIT A GOD DAMN NEW BORN CHILD IN, & THE BODIES WHERE AS STRAIGHT AS THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. They will spend $300k, to put on the most cheap heavy wheels. YOU PUT ON 22" TORQUE THRUSTS, great choice boomer. Your 1969(nice) Camaro looks identical to other 3 Camaros that parked beside you at the local SCCA you have been attending for 30 years. You talk about how fast it is, but never have touched a track. Good job flexing that 500hp only to hit cones & never get out of 2rd gear old man. Not even all the grip & power can help your over inflated ego.

Perhaps you are not familiar with the Optima Challenge. There are a lot of these pro touring cars that are driven very hard and outperform most modern cars.

You should meet Mary Pozzi
I’ve seen her autocross up in Monterey, it’s awesome. Granted, most pro-touring builds are as you describe. I’d like a bitchin’ Camaro with some spiffy bits underneath, but not with 22' Torq Thrusts. And the panel gap thing, yeah ... Methinks there's some rose tinted spectacles there.

Perfect that you brought this up, that red Camaro front and center was the first car I thought of. I've seen that Conquest out at Buttonwillow too, it's really cool.

I think we’re basically in agreement here, and I really dislike modern wheels on classics.
I saw this truck at an autocross I attended once. Amazing build, with an LSA and trick suspension.
My very stock Trans Am kicked the ever- loving shit out of it.

Yep. The “Pro-touring” builds are why I dragged my feet about joining the CAM classes in Autocross for so long. I see these guys with their seriously overbuild, overbabied cars and they look good, but...

yep about the build quality. just down the hall a bit from my lab is the staging garage for the design studio, and there’s a 1961 Continental stored there (belongs to an exec.) even the top end Lincoln back then had huge panel gaps and poor body fits.

The person who wrote this article, truly doesn’t understand the difference between restored modification cars(resto-mods) and true pro-touring cars! I really don’t have time to explain it either. But there’s enough info out t here(on the web ) to educate everyone. N ow personal preference is one thing. But if you really want to discuss a topic like this, please research first! No disrespect to anyone. That’s just my 2 c ents!

These clowns seriously say this? Must be hard to do auto-X with those rose colored glasses on.

Monterey, CA? At the airfield in Marina near the old F t. Ord? A guy I used to work with was always out there for auto-x. I kept meaning to go, but family/work kept me from doing that.

Yeah I don't really get the hate. If those cars are slow around the track where he's at it's the drivers fault. Pro Touring is my favorite build style on these old pony and muscle cars

Money doesn’t buy creativity or inherent skill... and in actuality, expensive things tend to prohibit risky behaviors, like driving it purposefully on a track.
I wish I had a fraction of the money that these builds run.
Mark II or III Supra with a 1.5JZ transplant , Nissan 300ZX Z32, Porsche 996 GT3... MR2 with a 2GR V6 transplant. Early Lotus Evora S. Fiero GT with a Z34 DOHC V6 transplant. 4th-gen Firebird Formula with an IRS and 3.6L High-feature DOHC V6 crate engine and 6-speed gearbox transplant.
All sorts of ideas for real-world useable fun car upgrades that aren’t mega-dollar re-framed and LS-powered 6os and 70s muscle cars.

That’s the place, I used to autocross fairly often with NorCal UFO, the Datsun group, because my buddies drove 510s. Haven’t been up there in years though (see work/family). A s I understand it, autocrossing was going to be shut down there for some reason. Don’t know if that came to pass though.
